What We Do: Music Education and Additional Student Opportunities

Music Education

MYS’ approach is modeled after the best music conservatories in the world with the goal of educating the whole musician, not just preparing for concerts. The conductors and coaches discuss the history and nuances of the compositions with the students, not just the technical difficulties of a passage. Music education classes in ear training, music theory, solfége, piano, music history and composition are also offered on at no extra charge to MYS students. Click here to download a PDF of the 2010-11 Music Education Classes. All MYS students participate in an annual orchestra retreat where the orchestra grows as a group, and the individual sections receive intensive coaching on material and performance. Professional musicians from the Minnesota Orchestra and other music groups coach sectionals.

Additional Student Opportunities

Symphony Solo Competition
The stakes are high as MYS’ top Symphony musicians perform in a recital to determine the winner of the annual Symphony Solo Competition. The winner goes on to perform his or her concerto with the MYS Symphony Orchestra conducted by Manny Laureano.

Chamber Concert
MYS Chamber Concerts are an opportunity for MYS students to showcase their talent in small ensembles, duos and as soloists. The event takes place each spring in an intimate setting at St. Luke Lutheran Church in St. Paul.

Small Ensemble Referrals
MYS is frequently contacted to provide small ensemble music for public and private events. Students who play in extra-curricular ensembles can register with MYS to receive referrals. Contact Rachel Bittner at rmbittner@mnyouthsymphonies.org for more information.
