Head Librarian

JOB TITLE: Head Librarian

LOCATION: Twin Cities Metro

TYPE: Part-time

START DATE: immediately, August 2021     


Job Summary: Responsible for managing the collections of MYS-both the music library and instrument collection. Manage and process the music needs for all orchestras. Order and maintain inventory of music. Prepare music for volunteer librarians. Keep database of library and track outside rentals and music instrument rentals. Attend Saturday rehearsals and assist conductors, volunteer music librarians and MYS staff. Must be able to lift 40 to 50 pounds. Hours expected to be 15-20 hours per week.


  • Solicit music needs from the conductors for each trimester (including sight-reading and special events) in a timely fashion
  • Research and order music for purchase or rental
  • Keep a record of the music ordered and costs per orchestra
  • Prepare all music for distribution by volunteer librarians
  • Coordinate and supervise volunteer librarians
  • Maintain library database and physical inventory
  • Process music rented from our library by community orchestras and schools
  • Coordinate and maintain orchestra seating charts
  • Write and prepare program notes for concert programs
  • Coordinate audition excerpts and prepare them for publication on the website
  • Coordinate licensing for recorded MYS music for sale
  • Assist with rehearsal on Saturdays
  • Manage the inventory of MYS instruments and their rental to MYS students


  • Undergraduate degree, BM or BA in Music preferable


  • Deep knowledge of orchestral music and practices
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills including the ability to supervise volunteers
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to organize the library environment
  • Able to work collaboratively with artistic and administrative staff
  • Able to work individually and utilize organizational systems to complete projects on time
  • Computer literacy and familiarity with Microsoft Office
  • Able to pass a criminal background check
  • Able to behave in a professional, respectful and appropriate manner as outlined in MYS Administrative Guidelines and Policies manual, including the MYS policies regarding harassment, sexual harassment and anti-discrimination
