Volunteers Are Essential to the success of MYS!
The volunteer efforts of parents, alumni, friends and family, are essential to helping our programs thrive. Volunteering with MYS will bring you into a warm and welcoming environment and give you the opportunity to meet new friends and contribute to a wonderful organization!
If you have any further questions, please contact Emily Bradt, Volunteer Coordinator at [email protected].
Volunteer duties may include:
Rehearsal attendance check-in: You would be on duty one Saturday per month for about an hour to check in students as they arrive for rehearsal. Duty times would be 8:00-9:30am and 9:30-11:00am.
Concert supervisors: Parent volunteers help supervise students as they move between the stage and their seats in the auditorium of the concert venue. Supervisors must stay with the orchestra for the entire performance and also make sure students are respectful during the performance. This is a Sunday duty, but an orientation at dress rehearsal (Saturday) is required. Parent supervisors do not need a ticket for the concert.
Saturday rehearsal aide: This involves a number of activities, including: ushering students to sectional locations, assisting/supervising sectionals, helping with distribution of music, working with special guests when we have Music & Melody Makers (children ages 3-14 come to try out orchestra instruments), setting up and striking chairs at rehearsal, and other rehearsal needs.
General office help: Duties include help with bulk mailings, database work, music inventory, and other light office duties. These tasks could be done during the weekdays and some on Saturdays.
Light office housekeeping: This would involve dusting, emptying baskets and vacuuming. This could be done during Saturday rehearsal time.
Special events: This could include special run out concerts with individual orchestras, Minnesota Orchestra sectionals, Music & Melody Makers, and Bring-A-Friend to rehearsal day.
Percussion moving: Percussion students are responsible for setting up equipment for rehearsals and concerts, but we can always use adult assistance moving equipment within the building as well as to and from concert venues for rehearsals and concerts. MYS rents a U-Haul truck to move equipment to and from concert venues.
Other: There are a few volunteer duties that come with some tuition credit because they involve a larger commitment and they may require attendance at most MYS rehearsals. If you are interested in learning about these opportunities, please contact our Operations Manager Krin McMillen, [email protected].
Volunteers should sign in at the MYS admin desk each time they do a volunteer service. There is a clipboard at the admin desk for this purpose. If you are volunteering at the MYS office you can sign in at the front desk. Some companies will honor volunteer time with a donation to MYS. If your company participates in this kind of program, please let us know.
