Trimester 3 Reference Recordings

Rehearsal Notes

Apr 19

Newbold

  • Trombones, play low Es with a tuner

  • Clarinets:

    • M9 through M67 practice with a metronome. Quarter note equals 168

    • Play louder than you think you should 

    • Keep air moving while tonging (all clarinets) 

Renaissance suite

  • Be aware: We are only going to do the third movement 

  • Brass, at the very beginning play strong Forte!

  • M18: First time woodwinds play a loud piano / Mezzo piano. Not too fragile 

Appalachian Air

  • Start in M2 we do not play M1 

  • Skip M10,11 and 12. 

  • M50: Woodwinds play all notes M50 to M53 

  • Skip M79

Newbold

  • M9: Clarinets - play loud

  • M9: Horns and trombones - listen to the Bass and cellos and match their sound

  • M33: Flute, oboe, clarinet - play short and aggressive

  • M75: Flute and clarinets - play very loud and match the violin

  • M89: Trumpets - keep your air moving for clear fast notes

  • M110-117: Lots of space between the notes

  • M124-138: Brass - make your quarter notes short and spaced

Susato

  • Note: We are only going to perform the third movement (La Bataille)

Newbold

  • Everything should be louder than other pieces, because we play this with a full orchestra.

  • Be very confident on rhythms because many times the rhythms have small differences between the parts.

  • m. 148: watch out for the sharps

Hazo

  • Listen to the recording and play along to get a feel for switching tempos

Daughtrey

  • m. 23–50: count rests carefully to make sure you’re entering on the right beat

  • m. 54–71 (Parts 1 and 2): Practice with metronome at 120 for the 8th note. Gradually increase speed as you gain confidence.

Newbold

  • Beginning (clarinets): change dynamic from piano to mezzo forte

  • m. 9–49 (woodwinds): make staccatos short

  • Remove slurs when practicing difficult rhythms

  • m. 148–end: write in reminders of sharps from key change

Mar 1

Susato

  • Mvt. 1: lots of space between the notes

  • Mvt. 2: maintain rhythmic precision even in legato style

  • Mvt. 3: keep air moving during fast 16th notes

Daughtrey

  • Be sure to play the fast notes with steady beat

Hazo

  • Practice changing between the 2 different tempos

Newbold

  • m. 148–end: Pay special attention to the key change
